Why We Need Iodine?

Table salt is a special kind of salt derived from natural deposits found in oceans, seas, and lakes around the world. Sea salt is often used for cooking and as a seasoning for foods, however, it is now being used increasingly for preservation purposes. It's commonly known as table salt, rock salt, or kosher salt. Salt is formed naturally by evaporation from seawater and has been used for ages as a preservative for preservation purposes. It's also referred to as black sea salt or solar salt.

According to health experts, sodium chloride in its ionized form (salt of high sodium concentration) is an important part of the human diet, especially for our survival in the early days. During those times, our ancestors ate large amounts of seawater which contained traces of minerals like calcium, magnesium, iron, and potassium. Sea water was rich in these trace amounts of minerals, which allowed them to thrive without modern conveniences like refrigerators, computers, and TV dinners.

Evaporated sea salt contains a wide range of minerals. Some are rich in sodium and magnesium, while others offer less sodium and more potassium. For instance, evaporated sea salt from the US and other countries is known for its high sodium content. However, in places where sea salt is abundant, such as the Mediterranean Sea, there are no recorded cases of hypertension or of mineral deficiencies. Evaporated sea salt is considered a safe dietary supplement even for persons with sodium deficiency problems.

The trace mineral content of kosher salt is much higher than that of sea salts. In addition, the mineral content of kosher salt is similar to that of table salt. Kosher sea salts have less sodium and more potassium, making them ideal for people with a sodium deficiency. Sea salt and table salt differ primarily in their concentrations of minerals.

It has been found that a number of diseases can strike people who have an iodine deficiency. One such disease is thyroid disease. Many diseases of the thyroid gland such as goiter, anemia, and hyperthyroidism can be traced to iodine deficiency. It is possible to prevent iodine deficiency by eating foods that are rich in iodine, such as fish, shellfish, poultry, and wheat germ. This is the safest way to prevent iodine deficiency. However, avoiding iodine-rich foods may not be enough to prevent iodine deficiency because iodine is also found in a lot of foods, especially in wheat germ, nuts, dried beans, and meat.
